Ph.D. Program of Study

Each student is required to submit a Planned Program of Study, detailing his or her course work, thesis schedule, and qualifying examination schedule and indicating that all the minimum requirements of the university and the faculty of the Case School of Engineering are satisfied. The Planned Program of Study must be approved by the advisory committee, the department chairperson and the dean of engineering before registering for the last 18 credit hours of the program.

The Planned Program of Study must be submitted within one semester after passing the qualifying examination.

Complete, printed, Planned Programs of Study and Supplementary Information for Ph.D. forms may be dropped off in the CSE Dean's Office, Nord 500, Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm.

Petition to Waive MS Degree Requirement


Instructions for completing the Planned Program of Study and Supplementary Information forms
  • Please type all information on the Planned Program of Study and Supplementary Information forms
  • Do not list courses more than once on either form
  • On the Planned Program of Study form:
    • List only courses taken at Case for the doctoral degree, including 701 and 703. Do not list courses that were taken for the MS or other graduate degrees
    • List course numbers, not CRN numbers
    • Insert the semesters in which you anticipate taking the graduate teaching courses 400T, 500T and 600T; Insert the prefix for the graduate teaching courses (i.e. ECIV400T)
    • Include the semesters in which you anticipate taking UNIV400A, B and C as required. At minimum, all Ph.D. bound students must take UNIV400 or UNIV400B
  • On the Supplementary Information form list all coursees taken beyond the B.S. degree at Case or elsewhere
  • A minimum of 6 hours of Basic Science and 12 hours of Breadth courses must be shown on the Supplementary Information form
  • A written course description must be provided for Special Topics, Independent Study or any other courses that do not have a specific description in the General Bulletin. Course descriptions should be submitted with the Planned Program of Study.

    Students can write the course description themselves, or they can use a course description written by the professor of the class. The course description should be signed by the instructor. All course descriptions must include the following information:

    • Course name, course number, semester and year
    • Instructor
    • How often the class met and/or how often the student met with the instructor for review
    • Grading policy including, as applicable, the number of exams, research papers and class presentations.
    • Books, texts and readings used
    • Topics covered and a general course description
    • Any other special information pertinent to the course's complete description
Petition to Waive MS Degree Requirement

A letter of petition should be addressed to the Case School of Engineering (CSE) Dean and must include the following elements:

  • Student's current contact information
  • Reasons why the student should be allowed to waive the MS degree requirement
    Possible examples of such reasons could include:
    • Previous research experience
    • Published papers (please list complete citation for each publication)
    • Supplemental coursework or enrichment
    • Previous work experience in field of study
  • The student advisor's signature on the petition
  • The student's signature on the petition
