Numerous Awards
I
received a Ph.D. degree in systems and control engineering from Case in
1977. I was an assistant professor in the mechanical engineering
department at Cleveland State University from 1977 to 1979 and have
been on the faculty of the Case School of Engineering at Case Western
Reserve University since 1979. I am a professor of electrical engineering
and computer science and hold an academic appointment in the department
of mechanical and aerospace engineering. I am a fellow of the IEEE and
have received numerous awards at Case, including the Sigma Xi Research
Award for contributions to stochastic control, the John S. Diekoff
Award for Distinguished Graduate Teaching, the Tau Beta Pi Outstanding
Engineering and Science Professor Award, the Undergraduate Teaching
Excellence Award and the Carl F. Wittke Award for Distinguished
Undergraduate Teaching. I was associate dean of engineering from 1994–1997 and chair of the department of systems engineering from 1990–1994.
Senior Projects and Summer Internships
Undergraduate students have participated in my research mostly as a part of senior projects and summer internship experiences.
Wide Variety
I
have had the opportunity to teach a wide variety of undergraduate and
graduate classes during my 25 years at Case, from freshmen to Ph.D.
research students. This diversity has provided me with an opportunity
to develop an effective teaching style.
Relaxed Classroom Atmosphere
I think students in my classes appreciate the relaxed classroom atmosphere and thoroughness and clarity of the lectures.
Bright and Dedicated
The most rewarding aspect of working at Case for me is working with very bright and dedicated students.
Around the World
Many of my former students are teaching at universities around the world, working in industry or in government.
