Great Lakes Energy Institute Named Ohio Center of Excellence in Advanced Energy
New ways to make energy will mean new jobs. That was the clear message this week at a press conference at the Ohio Board of Regents in Columbus, Ohio. Gov. Ted Strickland and Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut spoke about potential benefits of Ohio's Centers of Excellence in advanced energy. The governor formally announced establishment of nine centers at eight universities. An Ohio Center of Excellence will reside at Case Western Reserve's Great Lakes Energy Institute. Read more.

BME Professors Develop Technology for Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Eye Diseases
Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Case Medical Center have granted to Bioptigen, of Research Triangle Park, N.C., an exclusive intellectual property licensing agreement for Fourier domain optical coherence tomography (FDOCT), an imaging technology. The technology was developed from research by Andrew Rollins, Warren E. Rupp associate professor of biomedical engineering and Joseph Izatt, formerly on the biomedical engineering faculty at Case Western Reserve and now part of the biomedical engineering faculty at Duke University. Case Student Honored as Tau Beta Pi Laureate
Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, named B.S/M.S. civil engineering student Chad Fusco, one of its four Laureates for 2009. The award is given to TBP student members who "outstandingly exemplify the spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges." Fusco, who also has a minor in theatre, joined student theater groups during his first semester at Case. Learn more about Chad's many accomplishments in the TBP Bulletin.

Macromolecular Science Goes for Maximum Coverage
Over a three month period starting in July 2009, the covers of four major academic journals featured the work of faculty from Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering. Professor Stuart Rowan commandeered two covers: Macromolecules, for a review article and Langmuir for a research article titled: Tailoring the Properties of Guanosine-Based Supramolecular Hydrogels." Department Chair and Professor David Schiraldi had his research featured in Macromolecular Materials and Engineering, while the work of Gary Wnek, Joseph F. Toot Jr. Professor, was the cover for Small.
