 Team Case Finishes in Top 20 of DARPA Urban Challenge
Team Case and its autonomous car DEXTER finished in the Top 20 of the DARPA Urban Challenge, outlasting Caltech, Georgia Tech, and Princeton, to name a few. In a last minute decision by race officials, DARPA only accepted 11 teams in the final race which will be held Saturday, November 3 at the former George Air Force Base in Victorville, CA.
"Of course we're disappointed in not making the finals," said Wyatt S. Newman, professor of electrical engineering and computer science and faculty leader of Team Case. "But to make it this far on our very first try is a terrific accomplishment. I couldn't be prouder of our team, and the entire Case community has much to be proud of. Everyone worked very hard and worked long hours. We're a spirited team and with a great sense of humor, and we accomplished so much in just one year."
"Team Case is proof that we are one of the best schools in the country," said Norman C. Tien, dean of the Case School of Engineering. "These remarkable students, led by Professors Wyatt Newman and Roger Quinn, have been tremendous ambassadors for this institution. They demonstrate the power of our student-faculty research collaborations. I could not be more proud."
The story of Team Case and DEXTER will soon be shared with the entire country as part of a Discovery Channel documentary on the Urban Challenge airing in February.
