Case Names New Chair of Materials Science and Engineering
July 11, 2007
CLEVELAND - Case Western Reserve University is pleased to announce the appointment of James D. McGuffin-Cawley as chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, effective July 1, 2007.
McGuffin-Cawley received his B.S from Alfred University in 1978 and his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1984. After two years at what is now NASA Glenn Research Center, he began his academic career at in the College of Engineering at Ohio State University, where he spent six years.
McGuffin-Cawley returned to Case in 1991 as the Great Lakes Associate Professor of Ceramic Processing and became a full professor in 1996. He was named Arthur S. Holden Professor of Engineering in January 2007. From 2002 to 2007, he served the Case School of Engineering as associate dean for undergraduate programs.
"Jim has proven himself time and again as a leader among his colleagues and as a tireless advocate for our students," said Case School of Engineering Dean Norman C. Tien. "Both of these qualities make him well suited to tackle this new role."
McGuffin-Cawley's research has included work on mass transport and corrosion of ceramics, especially in aerospace applications. Most recently, he has concentrated on advanced processing strategies for producing components from ceramics and, to some extent, from powdered metals. He enjoys teaching broad range of courses from introductory to specialized graduate courses in materials science and engineering. In addition, he has developed SAGES courses, taught in the engineering core and the Masters of Engineering and Management (MEM) program.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University is a research-centered educational environment whose mission is to enhance the productivity, quality and benefit of materials-related learning to its students, faculty, and community. The department bears a commitment to the improvement of materials technology as an advantaged academic unit equipped with state-of-the-art facilities in areas of materials surface analysis, mechanical characterization and an extensive suite of advanced electron microscopy instrumentation that act in synergy to consistently thrust us among the top tiers of materials research institutions in the nation. The department's faculty and students have a long tradition of performing cutting-edge research that leads to revolutionary discoveries in areas ranging all the way from metallic glasses to advanced semiconductor development.
