May 6, 2007
CLEVELAND - The Society of Plastic Engineers today announced the winners of the 2007 annual awards. The honorees will be presented their awards at SPE-ANTEC 2007 on Sunday, May 6, 2007 during the "SPE Celebrates!" banquet at the Millennium Hotel in Cincinnati. Among the honorees is Case School of Engineering faculty member Gary E. Wnek, who will receive the Annual Award for Benefit to Society, also known as the John W. Hyatt Award.
Wnek is the Joseph F. Toot, Jr. Professor and chair of the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering and faculty director of Case's The Institute for Management and Engineering (TiME). He is recognized for his contributions to polymers in medicine and, in particular, for his research and development of electrostatic spinning (electrospinning) as a method for the fabrication of micro- and nanofiber scaffolds for tissue engineering, drug delivery, and applications in regenerative medicine which are nearing commercialization.
Previous Hyatt Award winners include Dr. Robert Langer, recent Ford Lecturer and pioneer in drug delivery and tissue engineering, Dr. Robert Gore, inventor of GoreTex, and former President Jimmy Carter, who's Carter Center used a polymer cloth that has largely eradicated Guinea worm disease by filtering out the worm's larvae from drinking water.
